On Saturday12 June 2010

We held our Second Hand Book sale and shove a 20p attraction at Rutherglen's Landimeer Day.

This is was to raise funds for the continued operation of our Holiday Flat in Largs where we provide

holidays for deserving families in the Rutherglen area.

On Thursday 27th May 2010

We made a £2000 donation to Help4Heros and had a talk from ex Para Terry McCourt

telling us about the marvellous work this charity does for wounded servicemen.

On Thursday 20th May 2010

Our Speaker was Geoff Bryden of Cambuslang.

Geoff Bryden joined the Territorial Army in 1939, was mobilised to France,

attacked by German General Rommel's tanks and survived being bombed by German

Stukas. He was captured after narrowly escaping death when a bullet riccoched

off his helmet, then held as a Prisoner of War during which he was nominated

by an escape committee to stand in for the famous Air Ace, Douglas Bader.

He was among those marched on the  “Long March” from Poland in Winter-Spring of 1945.

One of a series of death marches during the final stages of the Second World War

in Europe. (Over 80,000 Allied POWs were forced to march westward across Poland,

Czechoslovakia, and Germany in appalling winter conditions, lasting about four months

from January to April 1945.

Geoff has been in demand as a speaker at local schools after being asked to make a DVD

for the National Museums Scotland

He was very well received as our speaker and warmly thanked by President Andy Cattanach and

Past President Lex Colquhoun.

You can view Geoff's DVD on "You Tube" by clicking on the link below.

Over the weekend 23 to 25th April 2010 the Club held its annual fellowship weekend.

This year a new venue was tried out, namely Keavil House Hotel at Crossford near Dunfermline

This turned out to be an ideal location not too far away and with all the facilities we needed.

The 15 attendees seemed to have enjoyed the break thoroughly, as evidenced by

President Andy's photographs of the event. To see these click on the link below.

I might have known that Andy would photograph an old car but he might have

given me a caption to let me know what it was. Also did Elvis really leave the building?

On Saturday 27th March 2010

PP Phil Spence organised our annual sponsored walk to raise funds for Erskine Hospital.

The walk round the meadows at Callander was blessed with good weather and the walk

provided a good appetite for the fellowship lunch that was enjoyed at the Lade Inn at the end.

On 25th March 2010

We held our Annual Guest Night with a number of guests to whom we hoped to show

the benefits of the fellowship and other advantages that Rotary membership provides.

Our speaker on this occasion was Esther Shiliday the Cathkin pupil that we had sponsored on a

Rotary Euroscola trip to the European Parliament in Strasburg

Below is President Andy's photographs of the presentation to Esther of her

Euro Scholar Certificate.

On Tuesday 16th March 2010

for local Schools. This competition organised by Donald MacLeod's Vocational Service Committee

ably assisted by Bill Liggat and Jim Fitzpatrick was won by a team from Stonelaw Academy.

The suitably engraved Sir James Munn Memorial crystal trophy was presented by Muriel Munn.

On Saturday 27th February 2010

We took part in the Nation wide effort to collect funds to match the challenged by the Bill & Melinda Gates

Foundation to raise 2 million dollars. Which if we do, they will match. This entire 4 million dollars will then

go towards the eradication of Polio from the world.

A great effort was mounted by our Club assisted by our Daughter Club Cambuslang, and our neighbours the

Dennistoun Club. Thanks to the help and co-operation from Tesco and the generosity of their Rutherglen

customers we raised nearly £1000 and also enjoyed fun and fellowship with our fellow Rotarians.

Our Past President Ian Wilson, who's committee organised the event, parked his black taxi, outside the store

with its special "Thanks for Life - End Polio Now" livery kindly provided by Past President Bill McIntosh's

National Sign Company.

Our collection, along with other Rotary Clubs in Britain, Ireland and across the world will be a significant addition

to the £416 million ($633 million) already contributed by Rotary to protecting more than two billion children in

122 countries.

Once eradicated, polio will follow smallpox as only the second disease ever eliminated world wide.

In the 25 years since Rotary started its Polio Plus campaign the number of countries where polio is endemic

has been reduced from more than 125 to just 4 - Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Nigeria.

The campaign was also publicised in Cathkin High School with help from the Head teacher

Anne Marie McNair & staff, including librarian Ann McNeely.

Displays were also set up in Rutherglen Library and banners posted around Rutherglen.

President Andy's photographs of this event show -

with Past President Ian Wilson in his taxi & Tesco staff.

On Rotary day 23/02/2010

IPP Bill McIntosh organised a display in Rutherglen Library publicising Rotary and in particular

our Nation wide "Thanks for Life" project to rise to the Gates Foundation challenge to raise

$2 million which they will then match in an final effort to fund the eradication of Polio from the world.

On Thursday 11/02/2010

We were given a most impressive address by Dr Peter Hughes OBE, the CEO of Scottish Engineering.

His enthusiasm for all things Scottish and especially Scottish Engineering was wonderfully presented

and raised the spirits of all of us who thought Scottish Engineering excellence was a thing of the past

and revealed to us that contrary to popular opinion Scottish engineering was doing wonderfully well.

He encouraged us to use what ever influence we had to persuade young people to take up Engineering

as a great career future.

Additionally Peter entertained us by playing a variety of stringed instruments and even showed us how easy

it was to play these by getting our own, un musical, George Alston to play excellently, despite George's misgivings.

On 1/12/2009

PP and Paul Harris Fellow, David Wilson lost his two year long battle with the complications

of surgery on his knee.

David who was 75 joined our Club on 09/09/1982 and was President 1992 / 1993

He was our Treasurer from 2000 until his death and was made a Paul Harris Fellow by the Club

in recognition of his long and dedicated service to Rotary and our Club in particular.

An excellent obituary to David was published in the Rutherglen Reformer on 16/12/2009

referring to David's long connection with Cambuslang and Rutherglen. Having started his long

involvement with football with Cambuslang Rangers before becoming a semi professional player

with Herts until a knee injury brought his playing days to an end. However his interest in the

game remained primarily as a life long supporter of Glasgow Rangers in addition to his other passion, golf.

Both playing expertly and spectating at Open matches throughout the world..

In business David had a distinguished career as an accountant. Hence his Treasuerrship of our Club.

A task he carried out in his quiet gentlemanly way typical professionalism.

David will be sorely missed in the Club.

On Thursday 8th October 2009 the Rotary Club of Rutherglen was alerted

to the Tsunami and Earth Quake disasters in the Pacific.

We also watched a DVD highlighting the relief provided by Rotary through

the Shelterbox scheme.

This provides, to disaster areas, boxes containing a tent to give shelter to up

to ten people together with other contents like sleeping bags,

cooking equipment and water purifying tablets, invaluable in a disaster area.

The Club unanimously agreed to immediately provide funds to supply

approximately eight of these boxes.

To see more about these boxes and the work being done by the Shelterbox

organisation click on this link. http://www.shelterbox.org/ here you will be

able to donate to this worthwhile cause or if  you wish you could donate

Sir James Munn

Born 27/07/1920 Died 04/08/2009

Following his Dux at Stirling High School and an Honours Degree from

Glasgow University, Jim joined the Indian Civil Service in 1941,

and before leaving in 1948 reached the exalted rank of Assistant Commissioner.

On return to Scotland he took up education as a profession, teaching modern languages

in Falkirk and Glasgow.

He was awarded the Palmes Academicques by the French authorities for the innovative

and extraordinary trips he and his wife Muriel arranged in the 1950s,

escorting large groups of school children to and from France, long before

school trips and foreign travel became straightforward.

From 1966 to 1970 he served as Rector at Rutherglen Academy and

at the end of this time organised the move to the new Cathkin High School.

Having established a reputation as a leading figure in the development of

curriculum and Secondary Education structure,

he was asked to produce the Munn Report, which, together with

the Dunning Report, established the future development of

education in Scotland. For this he was awarded an OBE in 1976.

From 1980 he was chairman of several important educational bodies

most significantly the Manpower Services Commission.

Each duty he carried out with typical expertise and enthusiasm

and as a result he was awarded a Knighthood in 1986.

Over the years he received honorary degrees from the Universities of Stirling, Strathclyde, Napier and Paisley, in recognition of his service to education.

Always the Gentleman and Scholar Jim was a delightful companion

with a keen sense of humour, a connoisseur of fine wines and a skilled bridge player.

If his other commitments had allowed he could have played Bridge for Scotland!

He was an active and dedicated member of the Rotary Club of Rutherglen

having joined on 5th October 1967 and served as the Club President 1996 To 1997.

Until his failing health prevented it he rarely missed a Club meeting and

was latterly granted the distinction of becoming an Honorary Member of the Club.

He is survived by his wife Muriel, his son-in-law and his three grandchildren.

PP David Paul then put his undoubted carpentry skill to good use

and produced a suitable and magnificent mounting frame.
