Rotary District 1230

News and Requests

District Governor's Newsletter May 2008

Firstly I would like to thank Rotarians for their continued support and good wishes to Sheila and myself over the past few months. It has been very much appreciated.

Jack Nicklaus endorses District 1230's bid to ‘End Polio Now'
We all agreed at the March District Council Meeting to attempt to set a Guinness World Record on 22nd June at Dundonald Links to raise funds for Polio Eradication. This is an opportunity for Rotarians, their friends and colleagues to help to bring this golf world record back to Scotland from China . We require 624 golfers to beat the record. However, we have heard that an English group are attempting to beat the record the day before. All clubs should have received eight invitation vouchers - two four balls from each club would give us a great start of 448 golfers.

Your support is essential!

We have had excellent publicity for our attempt in the Sunday Post, on the RI, RIBI, Scottish Golf Union websites and Bunkered Golf Magazine. We have received personal messages of support from Jack Nicklaus, RI President Wilf Wilkinson, Bob Scott (Chairman of TRF Trustees) and RIBI President Allan Jagger. We have also had good wishes of support from around the world wishing D1230 every success.

The Rotary world is watching us. Let's do it and help to ‘End Polio Now'! www.worldrecordgolf.com , for further information

Public Relations
In the last few months there has been unprecedented coverage of Rotary's Polio Eradication Programme. The Herald published a superb article in November highlighting Rotary's efforts to raise $100 million to match Bill and Melinda Gates' challenge. This was followed recently by the Sunday Post who sent a reporter to India to see the Immunisation Programme first hand. This was covered extensively on two successive Sundays. Congratulations to Bob Tomlinson on his efforts to publicise the excellent work of Rotarians.

Burma/Myanmar Cyclone
Again a natural disaster strikes some of the poorest people in the world. Unfortunately the political unrest and the uncertainty in Myanmar have made it difficult to send relief to the stricken survivors. The advice to clubs is that they should not send donations direct to the country. However, I would suggest that clubs wishing to send humanitarian aid should support Shelterbox, Aquabox and Life Straws which are all Rotary projects.

Membership
I am delighted that a good number of clubs have been successful in recruiting new members. However, our goal was a 10% net increase. If your club hasn't reached this target there is still time to do so in this Rotary year. If you have prospective members in the pipeline don't hold off until July. To register with District and RIBI the cost would be 25% of the annual fee, less than £10. Remember we are Rotarians because someone asked us.

Foundation
I am delighted that it appears that Foundation giving has increased this year. Clubs wishing to make donations should make sure that they are sent before 30 th June.

Good News
Congratulations to the team from St Aloysius College who were winners of the National Youth Speaks Competition held in London . This is a first for our District. Well done!

More great news! We must congratulate PDG Jim Moulson from Paisley Callants who was successfully nominated as RIBI President 2010/11. We wish Jim well and I am sure he will have the full support of every Rotarian in District 1230.

Cancer Care
The Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres are delighted with the support that they continue to receive from Rotarians. More recently Rotary has joined forces with the Herald and Maggie's in their “Friends of Maggie's” campaign. I would encourage Rotarians and their families to become Personal Friends or perhaps your business could become a Corporate Friend of Maggie's. What ever you decide thank you all for your support for cancer care this year.

DGE Catherine Stewart will be walking the ‘Moon Walk', an overnight marathon of 26 miles, on 14 th June for cancer care with her counterparts from the other two Scottish Districts. If you wish to sponsor her attempt I am sure she will be delighted.

Finally I would like to thank you all for your continued support. Let's finish the year with a bang! Join us in our golf challenge and have a fun day out.

Best Wishes
Drew

DISTRICT GOVERNORS NEWSLETTER - JUNE 2007

Dear All

Where has the year gone? Much too quickly. .for sure which simply reflects what has been a jam-packed year of Rotary activity.

As this will be my last newsletter, I want to thank everyone for all the efforts that you have put into this Rotary Year - when we have all been exhorted to "LEAD THE WAY".

As I have travelled around the District, I have continued to be

absolutely amazed at the huge amount of effort and creativity that Clubs have been putting into Rotary this year.

Given the challenging world we live in, the opportunity to serve is greater than ever and we as an organisation really can make a difference for those in need.

Looking back at the year, I have so many wonderful memories. Clearly though, our 1230 District Conference in Aviemore was a fantastic weekend and I am deeply indebted to the Largs Club and conference Chairman Norman Reid for the huge efforts they made to make it such a memorable event.

But of course, we must look forward and ensure that our fantastic organisation addresses the greatest challenge we have. Namely, ensuring that we pass the baton to the next generation to continue the work of Rotary. The years ahead will continue to present us with a variety of great opportunities and I look forward to playing my part in addressing them.

It has been an honour to serve this year as District Governor and on July 1st I will pass over the chain of office to my good friend Drew Hughes. For me, this year has been a life changing experience, and one that I will treasure for, I trust, many years to come.

Meantime, once again, may I take this opportunity to thank you all for your support throughout 2006/7 and I hope I will have the chance to thank many of you personally at the handover dinner on Wednesday 27th June at the Glynhill Hotel in Paisley.

My Sincerest Best Wishes

Neil
