Present: Stuart Kemp, Duncan McIntosh, Brian Cole-Hamilton, Nigel Allon, Jim Bolton, Colin Stanfield.

Apologies: Jim Quigley, Charlie McEwen, David Dobson

Minutes: The minutes had been e-mailed to all committee members previous to the meeting

Correspondence: The Bill Huntley Memorial Peace Seminar would take place at Bradford University on 30th October. Rutherglen Rotary would not be represented.

Articles on anti-mines and mercy ships were passed round.

Projects:

1) Lifestraws- No money has yet been paid by Council. The contribution arranged from David Paul’s source has not yet arrived. Further action should be left to Council.

2) Trade Aid- This involves the purchase by rotary clubs of boxes of tools, specific to different trades. The approximate cost is £800 per box.

3) Rutherglen Victoria Project - Des Whelan has spent time in Rwanda. There has been a severe shortage of practical and technical skills since the civil war. There is an excellent local technical college which gets support from Rutherglen, Australia. Rutherglen Rotary Australia has earmarked $1000 US for the project and is encouraging us to do likewise. These contributions would be matched with funds from Foundation, dollar for dollar. The committee approved the project in principle but felt more information was essential before making any irrevocable decision.

Fund raising – It was felt that the committee should consider ways of raising £1000 to cover our largess

  4. Race Night - Duncan expressed some concerns about getting this event off the ground. Bill in the absence of Phil advised that Phil has put out letters to potential sponsors (in speaking to Phil on 15th Jan no response to his letters as yet) President Bill advised he may have 3 or 4 possible sponsors. There was a discussion about running the night without sponsors and it was agreed to leave final decision on format to March meeting. It was also decided to leave one horse free for auction per race as well as having all the horses in race 8 available for auction. The raffle was also discussed and decided to limit prizes to 6 or so. Duncan to check Friday 3rd April is OK with race organisers and hall is available.

  5. Tattoo - Duncan to progress bus and restaurant for 14th August. Tickets have been paid for but will not be issued by Tattoo until April 2009

ROTARY CLUB OF RUTHERGLEN

INTERNA TIONAL COMMITTEE

Minutes - Meeting 6TH November 2008

1. Apologies David Dobson, Stuart Kemp, David Wilson

2. Race Night

Bill wondered that as a Ceilidh was planned for Saturday 31st January 2009 whether we should delay the race night to March. Jim F did not see a problem in getting St Columbkills hall but we would have to check with the race organisers. We also have to watch no clash with the Fellowship weekend

Bill said all the arrangements for Ceilidh were in hand and apart from selling the tickets some sandwiches would be required for interval. Well done to Helen and her team

Phil has drafted a letter for potential sponsors for race night and this will be issued shortly.

3. Students Night Jim still to contact Geoff from British Council in next 2 weeks

Lifestraws: No feedback from Lifestraw Rotarian David Dutson and Jim has had no feedback from local Education. Jim will see his education contact tomorrow and feedback any progress. Duncan raised the issue of buying some Lifestraws as a thank you to David Dutson who came all the way from Glenrothes to give us the talk and then return for a meeting there on the Friday with the local Rotary Club. Given the expense of the straws it was deemed that the matter should be passed to Council on the purchase of straws

5. Tattoo

Date agreed as 14th August and Duncan to proceed with ticket purchase and later restaurant / transport.

6. AOCB

Again Phil raised the suggestion of a Car boot Sale as a possible fundraiser in 2009. Discussions raised over how the event would raise money ie entry money, sellers (Rotarians) donating cash raised as this was a convenient way of house clearance! Location was also discussed with the ideal being under cover in an industrial unit.

ROTARY CLUB OF RUTHERGLEN

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE COMMITTEE

Meeting held on Thursday 3rd July 2008

In Kings Park Hotel

PRESENT : Jim Bolton, Jim Fitzpatrick, Bill McIntosh

Apologies :: Duncan McIntosh, Phil Spence, David Dobson, Jim Munn, John Woodley, David Dobson

INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARS NIGHT

This will be held on a normal Cub meeting night, Suggested date Thursday 13th February 2009. Wives would be invited as well. Geoff Woolridge of the British Council to be contacted in November/December with invitation for up to 12 scholars. Format of evening would be similar to this year’s event. Pickup will be from one central point.

RACE NIGHT

It was suggested that we run a Race Night. As there are no plans for a Burns Supper (at present) proposed date is Friday 27th.February. If Tickets and publicity were available before Christmas it was felt that more club members would support this event. This would be in aid of "Let it Shine", Fiona Marra’s charity in Africa.

OTHER FUNDRAISING/SOCIAL EVENTS

Other suggestions for events were a Ceilidh and/or a Wine and Cheese evening.

ROTARY FOUNDATION

We expect that we will be asked to sell Christmas Cards and 2009 Calendars in aid of Rotary Foundation. This is usually from September.

SPONSORED WALK

As the walk in aid of Polio Plus had been successful, it was suggested that we organise a similar event in the Spring of 2009.

NOTE

The dates of some of these events would be dependant on other Club activities..

Rotary Club of Rutherglen

Inaugural Meeting of International Committee 2008/9 ( Includes Foundation)

Present: Duncan Mclntosh, Jim Bolton, Jim Fitzpatrick, Jim Munn, John Woodley

Duncan had produced an agenda sheet as an ice breaker to get the discussion going on what the Committee would wish to support in the following year.

Duncan advised that there had a meeting last night with President Elect Bill and the other incoming chairmen to discuss his agenda for the year 2008/9. Bill asked that the International committee undertake the running of a Race Night as a fundraiser. Bill had not nominated any specific charity but warmed to the notion of supporting Fiona Marra's efforts.

Discussion took place and all were in agreement to organise race night in 2009, date to be arranged after consulting Council. Charities to be supported were considered and agreement to look at supporting ones which aligned with RI, RIBI and Bill, namely Fiona Marra, Lifestraw and others

Other ideas were discussed like the Big Birthday Bash, concerts, bag packing but no decision was made on these this early in our planning.

Jim Bolton agreed to act as other nominee from Committee to Council

The other major task for the Committee was to plan for the International Students' Night in February which was the best time for the students

Meeting of the International and Foundation Committee at the Kings Park Hotel

on Thursday I st November 2008.

Present : George Alston , Donald McLeod , Eddie Goldberg ,Andrew Cattanach , Charlie McEwen , Jim Munn and Brian Cole Hamilton.

Apologies: John Woodley.

There was not much to discuss at this meeting and Brian reported that he had heard nothing from Larkhall.

A list had been circulated round the Club for members to purchase Rotary Christmas cards although only two members had shown an interest. It will be circulated again.

Since this meeting I have arranged with the British Council to hold the International Students night on the 28 February 2008. The Secretary and President have been informed.

Also a provisional programme has been arranged by the President for the Bums Supper and this committee will have to look at the following with a need to organise.

Programmes and songbooks

Tickets

Sale of tickets

If YOU can all give this some thought before the next meeting..

Meeting of International and Foundation Committee at the Kings Park Hotel on Thursday 4th October 2007

Present: George Alston , John Woodley , Jim Munn , Donald McLeod , Brian Cole Hamilton.

Apologies: Ronnie Forrest

Brian reported that he received communication from the Music Teacher at Larkhall Academy who would put the suggestion to the School committee as to a possible event. We wait for a further response.

It was agreed to circulate this years Rotary Christmas cards and hopefully be able to make an order. All profit would go to Rotary Foundation.

Discussion took place re aqua boxes but they appear to be taken over by what is now a LifeBox and as they now wanted a donation of £250 as opposed to filling the box ourselves it was decided that we had enough fundraising activities for this year and would take this no further.

Donald was informed of the other responsibilities of the International Committee and the proposed International Students night and the Bums Supper.

ROTARY CLUB OF RUTHERGLEN

Meeting of the International and Foundation Committee held at the Kings Park Hotel on Thursday 2 August 2007

Present: George Alston, John Woodley, Andy Catanach, Jim Munn, Brian Cole Hamilton.

The Students night was discussed and it was agreed that it would take the same format as last year, being held on a Thursday night at the Kings Park Hotel. From previous experience it was thought that the best time of year for the Students was February and George Alston would contact the British Council Rep. and seek his advice.

President Ian had indicated that a Burns Supper would be held at the Kings Park Hotel on the 18 January 2008 and this committee would assist in the organisation. As little was known what arrangements had been made no further discussion took place until further details would be made known by the President.

A further fundraising night was suggested. This would involve Larkhall School Band and Brian was in contact with the organiser to see if this was possible. We wait for a reply from the organiser.

It was agreed that a quantity of Rotary Calendars for 2008 would be ordered and sold within the Club. The cost of each calendar is £3.50 and of that £1.50 is donated to Foundation. George Alston will send the order form.

Present: George Alston , John Woodley , Jim Munn, Eddie Goldberg, Ronnie Forrest Brian Cole Hamilton.

Regarding the Students night no further discussion took place as it is still too early to contact the British Council.

Brian informed us that he has had no response from the organiser regarding the Larkhall School Band.

An order for 15 Rotary Calendars has been sent away to the Club concerned.

No further information was known about the Bums Supper.
